"A Small Town School with a Servant's Heart"

Admissions

Two questions to ponder as you consider your child's education...

1. What eternal difference will you make?

1. What is the value of your child's soul?

A Word from

Our A.C.E. Certified Administrator & Principal

From the very beginning, God guided every step and decision to establish this school. As our vision grows and student enrollment increases, He continues to build a team of loving and talented people eager to serve our community in the name of Christ. Each one shares his or her strengths, talents and resources to instruct and encourage Grace Christian Academy students in their pursuit of godly learning and righteous living. Through servant hearts and in miraculous ways, we have consistently seen the generosity of God as He provides exactly what is needed right when we need it. God is so good and faithful; His amazing GRACE overwhelming. To Him alone belongs ALL honor, glory and praise!

Our Environment

Grace Christian Academy is an independent Christian school committed to providing students with the opportunity to realize their full potential for both academic and character development in an environment that proclaims Jesus Christ as “King of kings and Lord of lords”. (1 Tim. 6:15, Rev. 17:14, 19:36)

Our school utilizes the Accelerated Christian Education (A.C.E.) curriculum with an emphasis on living a Christian life. The goal of this school is not to reform, but to train Christian youth within the scope of their ability.

Our Education

We Offer Education for K-12 Learners
  • Kindergarten: A child must have attained age 5 by August 1st of that year, in order to enroll in Kindergarten.  A pre-test will be given to assure the child is ready for ACE’s Ready to Read program – Kindergarten by traditional education terminology.
  • Elementary through High School:  Each new student transferring to our school from a public school or another private school (with the exception of another ACE school) will be tested to determine if there are gaps in his/her learning.  If gaps are discovered, the incoming student must take the PACEs to close the gaps (and pass them with a minimum grade of 80%) before going on to his/her prescribed course of study.
  • Please note:  Should a family enroll their children at GCA and have a sibling of Pre-School age, we might be able to accommodate  your pre-schooler.  Please contact the office for more information.

Our Outreach

The BLESS program, presented by ACEM® (Accelerated Christian Education Ministries), is active in reaching out to underprivileged children in countries around the world, such as the Philippines and India. This 12–to-15-week program consists of PACEs that culminate with the reading of the Gospel of Mark. Through the PACEs, BLESS Centers help children read and learn basic math skills. Most importantly, BLESS introduces the children to Jesus Christ through God’s Word in the PACEs.

Most children who utilize the BLESS program may not know their own names, ages, or may have never heard of Jesus Christ before. Over the years people have been taking a stand to make a difference! As a result of people willing to give their time and resources, children and families are being saved. This Christian outreach ministry is a great opportunity to encourage students to become involved in world missions. We need schools and individuals who will partner with BLESS to minister to children in the Philippines and India.

Our school was one of 33 schools worldwide that sponsored a BLESS center in the Philippines.

Learn By Doing

In addition to the highly acclaimed ACE curriculum, students can expect to enhance their Christian education with purposeful extra-curricular activities. In 2023, the following will be provided:

Art: GCA will focus on three different aspects of art. Local artists will teach the children more about Fabric Art, Wood Art, and Paint Art.  These lessons will take place on Tuesday afternoons, starting after Labor Day.

Music/Band: Elementary students (Levels 1 – 4) will be under the instruction of Mrs. Carol Wangerin for Music lessons on Mondays at 1:00 p.m. Students (Levels 5 – 12) will be participating in Band under the instruction of Mrs. Cindy Knight.  Band lessons will take place on Wednesdays at 3:00 p.m.

Student Council: GCA students will have an amazing opportunity to step into a servant leadership role this year.  Under the leadership of Mrs. Kulani Lawler, the Student Council will plan and execute several fun and exciting activities and fundraisers to enable the Student Council to serve various community members.

Contests & Convention

A.C.E. School of Tomorrow® gives young Christian students opportunities to develop leadership skills through Regional Student Conventions (RSC) and International Student Convention (ISC).

Students are learning dedication, preparation, time management, and how to compete. These Christian competitions for children train them to develop skills and attitudes that will prepare them for life!

Students ages 10 – 12, get to participate in the Junior Student Convention in Palmyra, MO in October. Students ages 13 and up, get to participate at the Regional Student Convention in Warrensburg, MO. In order for students to qualify for the International Student Convention, the student must place first through sixth place at the Regional Convention.

More About Our GCA Team

Mrs. Rina Burke

Mrs. Rina Burke was born and raised in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa.  In 1998, she came to the USA to be an Au Pair.  Her first host family was located in Raleigh, NC.

“I was rematched and found my ‘forever’ family in Lenexa, KS. I attended Johnson County Community College and graduated with an Associates of Arts, Liberal Arts Degree; the Honors Program; Desktop Publishing Computer Certificate, and the Personal Computer Application Certificate.

In College, Mrs. Burke  was very active in the local Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society and served on many committees. She met her husband, Jon, at college, and after graduation they married. They have two beautiful children, Justin & Abigaile’.

Mrs. Burke worked for the American Cancer Society in the Relay For Life Business Unit in Kansas City and then her journey took her and her family back to South Africa in 2009.

“What was supposed to be a one year journey turned into seven for the children and I.  In 2015, Jon was called back to the USA, but due to my immigration situation, the children and I were stuck in South Africa for an additional 16 months.  It was during that time that Jon was in a very serious car accident.  It is a miracle that he is alive.  Little did we know, that it was that accident that God was going to use to lead both of us on our Damascus Road moments on two separate continents.

“A very long story made short: After numerous miracles, we were united as a family in July 2016. God led us to Lowry City Christian School and that is where our journey with Christian education started.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic is when God called Mrs. Burke to open Grace Christian Academy.  She left South Africa with several promises of God in her heart, but the one that spoke directly to her heart and soul most was John 15:16 “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in My name, He may give it you.”

“May my life be worthy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Grace and peace be unto you.”

Mrs. Melody Hoppers

Mrs. Melody Hoppers was born in Bellevue, NE, at Offett Air Force Base. Her conversion came at the age of 17.

“I am humbled to be a child of the King. He gave me a husband whose love for the Lord is greater than his love for me, and I couldn’t have asked for a greater blessing.”

The Hoppers have two sons and five grandchildren. Their church family is Osceola First Baptist where they have been members for 25 years.

Mrs. Hoppers has been a clerk for their church for more than 10 years, and over the past 40-plus years has been involved with youth in youth groups, VBS, three mission trips, and two years coordinating and conducting a National Bible Bee for their  district. One of the youth under her coaching made it to the National Finals in Chicago.

Missionaries have always been a big part of the Hoppers family and many have passed through their home over the years.

In the past, Mrs. Hoppers has served in her community at Osceola’s Unique Boutique Thrift Store 10 years and served on the board of W.I.N.G.S. two years (a Women’s Domestic Abuse Home) that the Boutique supports.  She still occasionally volunteers at the Boutique. In addition, she has served in fundraisers for individuals in her community and Baptist Ridge Camp.

“Having worked as a Registered Medical Assistant in the medical field for over 30 years, and now being retired, my heart is in serving wherever God wants me. For the past seven years, he has led me to be involved with the Christian School.  I feel it is vital in the uncertain times we find ourselves in to hold fast to the values that Christian based schooling has for students. Our mission is to train them up to have a hope and stability for their future and to equip each student with the academic tools to help them succeed in whatever the Lord has in mind for them.”

For six years, Mrs. Hoppers was involved with Lowry City Christian School and the past year with Grace Christian Academy. She attended the Supervisor Training this summer and will take on the Home Economics class and work with her sister in the Art Class.

“We have watched God do amazing things since the formation of GCA, and we have no doubt, He has great plans for the future of Grace Christian Academy and our students.”

Favorite Verse:  II Timothy 3:16-17

As for her support of Christian Education, Mrs. Lawler says, “I believe in giving our children a firm foundation in the basics of education and it is equally important that our children receive a firm foundation in Christian principles and values.”

Ms. Bonnie Stevens
Ms. Bonnie Stevens was born in Belvidere, IL.  She has five children and four grandchildren. She lives in Osceola and attends Vista United Methodist Church. Ms. Stevens was baptized as a child and began a greater understanding of God’s grace later as an adult and to continue to get closer to God every day. She was a pastor’s wife for many years and taught Sunday School at Lowry City Methodist Church until it closed in 2020. Ms. Stevens attended DeKalb Co. Junior College to obtain her LPN and University of New York to obtain her RN. She worked as a nurse for 47 years before retiring in November of 2021. Mrs. Carol Wangerin

Mrs. Wangerin was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  She is married to Rick and they have four beautiful children.  Rick and Carol recently moved to Osceola.

“I asked Jesus into my heart as a child, but it was not until years later that I began to understand His grace and mercy and to grasp the enormity of what He accomplished by His death and resurrection.  I want to get closer and know Him better every day and be His servant for the rest of my life.”

Mrs. Wangerin attended Covenant College as well as Blair Business College.

She has served as the Co-Director of the Children’s Program at Eaton E. Free Church in Eaton, CO.  She also served as a Sunday School teacher for many years.  She is currently a Piano Teacher as well.  Both Carol and Rick are actively engaged in a Music Ministry.

Get to Know Our School

Facilities and Organizations

Grace Christian Academy is located in an historic church building in the heart of Lowry City, in west central Missouri.

Founded in 2020, our school is utilizing the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum (known as A.C.E.) with an emphasis on living a Christian life. We encourage our students, ages 10-12 to attend and participate in the A.C.E. Junior Convention; and ages 13 and above, to annually attend and participate in an A.C.E. Regional and International Student Convention.

For an optimum learning environment, we adhere to recommendations from A.C.E. curriculum, which is intentionally implemented in a unique individualized manner. After students have been diagnosed and placed in the curriculum at their performance levels, they are assigned study carrels located around the perimeter of a classroom called a Learning Center. These study carrels form an integral part of the A.C.E. experience and are referred to as student “offices.”

The individual offices minimize distractions and permit students to focus on their academics. To provide maximum privacy, safety, and effectiveness, a student office is accommodating in size, has adequate lighting, and is decorated with items that point their minds consciously and subconsciously toward Biblical values.

Built Upon a Rich History

Lowry City’s Reputation for Christian Education

In 1982, people within our community saw the need for Christian education and thus Lowry City Christian School (LCCS) was born. Prior to the school’s closing, Lowry City Church of God Holiness played host to the highly regarded program. Many people sacrificed greatly in order to advance the school over the years. As a result students excelled in character, academics and post graduate achievements.

Grace Christian Academy expresses sincere gratitude to every person who was part of LCCS and the Church of God Holiness. Our goal is to continue the legacy established by their commitment and dedication. GCA would not be here today, but for the Board of Directors at the Church of God Holiness who helped in the establishment of GCA and blessed our new program with school furniture, supplies and prayers for continued success.

Open Hearts & Open Doors

Over the years, many people walked through the doors of the Lowry City United Methodist Church. Once upon a time, this vibrant little church with a heart for their community served over 400 in their small, basement fellowship hall  at their annual fundraiser.

When LCCS decided to close the school, it was during that time, that God inspired the  opening of a new school. With virtually no resources, the Lord would have to make a way.  And boy, did He! After a meeting with the Pastor of  LCUMC, the congregation voted unanimously that the school could use the Sunday school rooms, as well as the basement. We had a home for our school!

When the church decided to officially close December 31, 2020, we faced a daunting challenge. We were about to lose our brand new school.

BUT GOD.

Nothing is possible without Him and we cannot do anything apart from Him. He called the unqualified. He provided and protected in miraculous ways. Nothing is a coincidence when it comes to the things of God and what He has ordained.

The Regional Methodist Council called  right before Thanksgiving to let us know that if the school was interested in the property, we would have to make an offer of at least $25,000 to purchase it. Since we did not have our 501C3 yet, they could not gift it to us.  God whispered, “Watch the impossible, become possible.”

The late Mr. Don Rice, who served the church faithfully, insisted that I do not ever offer more than $10,000 for the parsonage. Even that amount would be impossible, and we were running out of time. But, God always shows up, often at the last moment.

Having learned about the school’s situation over an unplanned, but Holy Spirit prompted lunch with a friend, Ed Micham, we were just hoping for someone else to be praying for us. And then, he said, “I will buy it for the school. No matter how much they want, I will get it.”

How good is God? The Council accepted an offer of $10,000 for the church with contents, the parsonage and the field behind the church. How good is God?!

Thankfully, we were able to get the good news to Mr. Don the night before he passed into Heaven and assure him that his advice had been followed and the Lord had provided.

We are eternally thankful for Ed & Juana Micham at Grace Christian Academy.

As for the Lowry City United Methodist Church members, we are very thankful for every sacrifice they made over all those years for the Kingdom of God. They surely had no idea that 50 years later, a Christian school would call this building home.

Statement of Faith

Grace Christian Academy is an independent Christian School committed to providing students the opportunity to realize their full potential for both academic and character development in an environment that proclaims Jesus Christ as “King of kings and Lord of lords” (1 Timothy 6:15, Revelation 17:14, 19:16).

1 Timothy 6:15 – “Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;”

Revelation 17:14 – “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.”

Revelation 19:16 – “And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords.”
As an independent school, we are not affiliated with any particular denomination or congregation, and we welcome students from all families who are committed to “Training up a child in the way they should go”, regardless of the family’s denominational preference. (Proverbs 22:6)

Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
We are a school, not a church, and as such we encourage and expect the students who have questions regarding specific doctrines or theology to discuss those questions with their pastor or local church body. It is important, however, for the parents to understand the beliefs shared by the founders of Grace Christian Academy regarding the Gospel message and the Christian life.

To view detailed list of core beliefs of Grace Christian Academy, see Student Handbook, p. 17-20

In order for a family to receive tuition credit the family that they refer must enroll at least one student and that student must be enrolled for a minimum of one semester. Tuition credit of one month will be given the month following the new families’ 18th week in the school year. If the new student enrolls during the second semester, the tuition credit will be given the following school year. If the referral is done by a family having their only student graduating and not having a tuition payment due at the end of the 18th week, the school will refund the referring family one month tuition. The amount of tuition credit or refund will be the highest tuition fee for the referring family excluding fees.

Annual Fundraising Events

The Annual Hog Roast & Auction fundraising event is scheduled for the 2nd Saturday in March. If the parents/students do not participate in the Hog Roast, a fee of $100/family will be charged to that family. This event is the financial backbone for our school and what ensures lower tuition. It is imperative and expected that each family participates.

Various fundraising opportunities may arise throughout the school year. These opportunities directly benefit student activities. All students are expected to participate.

Admissions Policy & Procedure

ADMISSIONS POLICIES

Proof of immunization or a properly filled wavier form is required before the student may attend classes. Our school abides by state law dealing with exemptions from immunization; and such students will be allowed to attend our school.

ALL NEW STUDENTS ARE ADMITTED ON PROBATION FOR THE FIRST SIX WEEKS!

A. KINDERGARTEN
A child must have attained age 5 by August 1st of that year and be fully toilet trained, in order to enroll in kindergarten. A pre-test will be given to assure the child is ready for A.C.E.’s Ready to Read program, kindergarten by traditional education terminology.

B. ELEMENTARY THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL (GRADES 1-12)

Each new student transferring to our school from a public school or another private school (with the exception of another A.C.E. school) will be tested to determine if there are gaps in his learning. If gaps are discovered, the incoming student must take the PACEs to close the gaps (and pass them with a minimum grade of 80%) before going on to his prescribed course of study.

C. DISCRIMINATION POLICY

GCA shall not discriminate against applicants, students, and others on the basis of race, color, or national/ethnic origin. We reserve the right to refuse admittance based on sexual orientation, sexual identification (God clearly designed humans male and female only), or religious preference.

D. SELECTION OF STUDENTS

The priority of student selection is as follows: Returning students will be given priority over new applicants. New applicants transferring from Christian schools will be given priority over transferring applicants from public schools. We will not accept married or divorced students, or students who are over 21 by the time of graduation.

E. ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE

The Admissions Committee consists of the Administrator of the school, the Principal, and/or members of the School Board. Standard of Conduct

If a student is to be punished for an infraction of the rules, he should have notice of what is expected. Our Standard of Conduct addresses the following areas:

A. COURTESY

Christians are supposed to treat everyone with the proper respect, and are to show proper deference to those in authority. Such conduct as talking back, sarcasm addressed to those in authority, complaining, gossiping, etc. will not be allowed. Swearing will not be tolerated. When a child’s attitude is not in accord with school policies or principles, the child will be placed on probation and parents/guardians will be called for a conference. If the administration feels the situation has not changed within two weeks, parents will be asked to withdraw the child.

B. CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR

  • Cheating, stealing, borrowing without permission and vandalism will not be tolerated.
  • Our language should be pleasing to God.
  • Students should refrain not only from cursing and using the Lord’s name in vain, but also from vulgar and slang expressions which are offensive (there are MANY in our current culture).

C. PHYSICAL CONTACT

Students are not to intentionally engage in physical contact with other students except when appropriate as determined by the school. Pushing, shoving, hitting, kicking, scratching, etc., are not acceptable conduct. Physical contact between members of the opposite sex is strictly prohibited.

D. WORDLY PURSUITS

GCA strives to impress upon the student Godly living in every area of life. In addition to the list of “Articles prohibited at school” on page 7, the following behaviors are not allowed: Drug abuse of any kind, reading and/or watching pornography, homosexuality, or any sexual activity outside of marriage between a man and a woman. Worldly attitudes such as envy or greed are to be avoided.

Students are expected to act in an orderly and respectful manner, maintaining Biblical Standards of social courtesy, moral behavior, acceptable language, and honesty. Students must agree to strive toward unquestionable character in dress, conduct, and attitude.

E. OFF-CAMPUS

The conduct that is prohibited at school is equally inappropriate away from school. The Christian life is not a game, with one set of rules for church and school, and another one for everyday life. Regardless of whether the activity takes place at, or away from school, the student is equally subject to discipline for those actions, up to and including expulsion. A statement must be signed by the parent acknowledging that they have read, understand, and agree that their child must abide by the Standard of Conduct, and they will not sue, or threaten to sue, the school for enforcement of the Standards of Conduct.

DISCIPLINARY POLICIES

GCA is not a corrective institution: consequently, we ask that a child not be enrolled with the idea that we will reform him/her. We are here to work with the home, but not to take the place of parents who have experienced difficulty in fulfilling their roles. GCA maintains a discipline which is firm, consistent, fair, and tempered with love. Our staff maintains standards of behavior in the learning center through kindness, love and a genuine regard for the student. However, when disciplinary action becomes necessary, it is firmly carried out, tempered by good judgment and understanding. Not all offenses warrant the same discipline. Therefore, we do have a system of demerits to guide in these areas.

Details of Demerits and Detention can be found in the Student Handbook, p. 8-10

Incentive Program

A. MERITS
“The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” Proverbs 15:3

The use of positive incentives is helpful in motivating students. One positive incentive is the use of Merit Certificates to reinforce and reward positive behavior. See the list below for the accomplishments that will earn merits. The Supervisor may also give discretionary merits for effort “above and beyond the call of duty.” Merits are given to encourage the students to develop Godly character and to continue to seek ways of displaying Godly character in all areas of life. A.C.E. has adopted the philosophy of rewarding the students immediately for Godly character displayed. Instead of focusing on rewarding our students with “money” merits (worldly viewpoint), we made a shift to emphasize and focus on the Godly character traits they display. Students will receive Merit Certificates and a small gift or word of affirmation to: 1) remind them of the Biblical philosophy to build Godly character; 2) recognize Godly character; 3) reward Godly character; and, 4) reflect Christ’s character.

A detailed list of merit accomplishments and privileges can be found in the Student Handbook, p. 12-14

GCA participates in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP), and archery will be part of our P.E. program. Students are required to participate in archery activities held at GCA during P.E. time. Participation on the GCA Archery Team (which includes after school practices and travel to Regional and State Tournaments) is a privilege available to students if they so choose.

FIELD TRIPS

The school strives for at least one field trip per year. Each student must submit a liability release and permission form that has been signed by his/her parents before being allowed to go on any field trip. The same is true for any scheduled school event.

 SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS

School pictures are taken once a year, usually within the first two months of school. The Principal will send a note home with the student indicating the particular uniform that is to be worn for picture day. The parent must pay the photographer (not the school) for any pictures desired. This is not included in the fees paid by the parent at the beginning of the school year.

BAND

Your child will be allowed to take Band provided they have their own instrument and are in Grade 5 or above. There is a beginning band and an advanced band. The Band teacher reserves the right to place the student wherever she feels the student can make the most progress. She also reserves the right to postpone band for your child if she feels that he/she is not ready for it yet.

MUSIC

A music course is offered in High School as an Elective. It is a 6 PACE subject and one may receive l/2 credit for successfully completing this course.

GRADUATION & AWARDS NIGHT

Graduation announcements, caps, and gowns for Kindergarten, 8th Grade, and Seniors may be purchased separately by the parents. Or, if you choose not to purchase these items to keep, a rental fee will be charged. This fee is according to the number of students graduating and the current price being charged for the caps, gowns, and tassels. All families are required to attend the Annual Awards Night.

Get Involved with Our Mission

Be a Blessing to Our School

Throughout the year, we count on the support of our community to meet the physical, educational, financial and spiritual needs of our students. There are many ways you can participate in our fundraising activities to help us enhance and maintain our learning facilities, provide classroom supplies or sponsor our students activities. We also welcome the wise and godly counsel of area pastors to visit our school and pray for our students and staff, or accept an invitation to lead our students in one of our weekly devotions.

Once a month during the school year, we host Special Chapel Services followed by a brief time of fellowship. The public is always welcome to attend. Check the Upcoming Events page for dates and guest speakers.

Learning to be a BLESSING

EAGLE STRENGTH

Our mascot at Grace Christian Academy is the mighty eagle, representing the strength of the Lord, who gives wing to all we learn and do.

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”  — Isaiah 40:31 KJV

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all they might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which He sware unto they fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildest not, And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.” — Deuteronomy 6:4-12

A Christian school is based on the foundational principle that God is Creator, and Master, and the BASIC PHILOPSHY that He has given mankind His Book, the Bible, to live by. All of life is to be governed by the Bible. Notice this truth:

“I am much afraid that schools will prove to be great gates of hell unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them in the hearts of youth. I advise no one to place his child where the Scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution in which men are not increasingly occupied with the Word of God must become corrupt.”–Martin Luther

The Scripture, God’s Word, MUST be taught to children as shown in Deuteronomy 6:4-12, the Great Commandment. The Bible is the guide for one’s faith and practice, instilling the principles of God’s Word into hearts and minds. All academic subject are taught from a Biblical perspective, from a CHRISTIAN worldview.
